DoC (Department of Conservation)

The Department of Conservation is the central government organisation set up to conserve the natural and historic heritage of New Zealand. DoC administers the National Parks, marine reserves and conservation areas. If you wish to take business to DoC land, you must first get in contact with DoC.

DTO (District Tourism Organisation)

HANZ - Hospitality Association New Zealand

A voluntary trade association representing more than 2000 hospitality businesses in New Zealand. HANZ provides members with advice on legal and trade issues and has purchasing deals with major wholesalers.

HAPNZ - Holiday Accommodation Parks of New Zealand

HAPNZ is the industry organisation for holiday parks in New Zealand. It is member-based.

Hospitality Standards Institute

This is the industry training organisation for the hospitality industry in New Zealand.

Hotel Council New Zealand

The New Zealand Hotel Council is an incorporated society whose members include international chains as well as independent, privately owned and boutique hotels.

ITOC - Inbound Tour Operators Council

ITOC represents two levels of members: those that are inbound tour operators (companies that provide links between tourism businesses in New Zealand and the overseas travel companies that book them) and allied members (or product suppliers). ITOC can help promote Auckland tourism companies to international travel trade and customers.

JATA - Japan Association of Travel Agents

JATA is an industry association for travel agents within Japan.

MANZ - Motel Association of New Zealand

MANZ is the national trade association representing motels in New Zealand.

MRTOs - Maori Regional Tourism Organisations

MRTOs is a term given to Maori tourism groups. The networks are diverse. Some are iwi based while others sit alongside RTOs. The majority exist to build capacity, encourage networking and relationships with key industry organisations.

NZMTC - New Zealand Maori Tourism Council

The NZMTC was initiated by 13 RTOs and formed in 2004. The purpose is to provide a mutually supportive network for the development of practice by member MRTOs. The NZMTC offers a 'one stop shop' for the tourism sector to engage with Maori in tourism.

PATA - Pacific Asia Travel Association

PATA is the recognised authority on Pacific Asia travel and tourism. PATA provides marketing, research and educational opportunities to a membership of government tourist offices, airlines, hotels, travel agencies, tour operators and related companies.


Qualmark is New Zealand's official quality agency. It is a partnership between Tourism New Zealand and AA which offers a licensing system for tourism's official quality mark. All tourism businesses in New Zealand are eligible to apply.

RTO - Regional Tourism Organisation

New Zealand is divided into RTOs responsible for marketing their region internationally and domestically. Tourism Auckland is New Zealand's largest RTO and represents the Auckland region.

TAANZ - Travel Agent Association of New Zealand

TAANZ represents New Zealand travel agents, retail and wholesale, inbound and outbound. It has a code of ethics for members which protects the public against business failure.

TIA - Tourism Industry Association New Zealand

TIA is New Zealand's main tourism industry association. TIA manages TRENZ, the New Zealand Tourism Industry Conference and the Tourism Industry Awards (see Tourism Events).
